A Preliminary Study of Realism in The Lord of the Rings
Abstract: This paper attempts to discuss The Lord of the Rings from the aspect of realism by meticulously analyzing every chapter of The Lord of the Rings. The author put forward that The Lord of the Rings is dominated by a single theme, i.e. the contradictory experience of man’s physical helplessness in the mortal world and man’s spiritual freedom. It concluded that The Lord of the Rings is a serious novel which reflect the real world in every chapter rather than an absurd fantastic novel.
