On Hardy’s Fatalism by Analyzing the Main Characters in Tess of the D’Urbervilles
Abstract: Hardy’s novels are full of fatalism, which is very obvious in his tragedy Tess of the D’Urbervilles. By firstly analyzing the social background of Hardy’s time and his Tess of the D’Urbervilles, and then Tess’s coincidental experience and Angel’s double character and Alec’s two destroys to Tess, this paper discusses how Hardy attributes these phenomenons to fatalism and expresses his fatalism through the three main characters.
